Scope of Application

The website www.cairn.info and its subdomains offer users online access to the full text of scientific publications under the following conditions (depending on the rights holders' preferences):

  • Purchase access to one or more articles, chapters, dossiers, or meetings (known as the "pay-per-view" system), with the option to download them in PDF format for certain publications;
  • Online purchase of one or more "paper" issues/copies of publications, granting access to the electronic version of the articles/chapters of the purchased title(s), as well as their download, if applicable;
  • Annual subscription to the "paper" version of journals offered on www.cairn.info, granting access, for certain journals, to all articles in electronic form, as well as their download;
  • Acquisition of monthly and annual access licenses to "bundles" of publications, for institutions as well as individuals (e.g., Cairn Pro).

Access to and use of the CAIRN.INFO SAS website, whose domain name is www.cairn.info, as well as all its subdomains, are subject to the conditions set out below and applicable laws. Users are informed that CAIRN.INFO SAS is not the owner of the information contained in the texts, comments, books, illustrations, maps, and images made available online, and therefore disclaims all responsibility in this regard.

Terms of Use

1 – Site Accessibility

CAIRN.INFO SAS endeavors, as far as possible, to maintain its services accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

However, CAIRN.INFO SAS may interrupt access, particularly for maintenance and updates, or for any other reasons, especially technical ones.

2 – Limitation of Liability

CAIRN.INFO SAS reserves the right to block or delete problematic content and data, particularly concerning the following topics:

  • Human dignity violation
  • Cyberbullying
  • Discrimination
  • Copyright infringement
  • Fake news
  • Off-topic content
  • Incitement to hatred and violence
  • Insults and invective
  • Advertising and commercial solicitation
  • Racism
  • Response to deleted content
  • Reproduction of complete articles
  • Reproduction of private messages and comments
  • Sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of gender-based oppression

In case of severe or repeated issues related to the above points, CAIRN.INFO SAS also reserves the right to delete the user accounts involved, without prior notice. No compensation, including reimbursement or others, will be owed to users who may have a subscription.

8 – Electronic Offprints

In the specific case of electronic offprints, authors, contributors, and other partners benefiting from this service agree to use it in a reasonable and non-commercial manner. Cairn.info SAS reserves the right, at any time, to limit usage or permanently remove access to the full text of an article accessed through these specific links.

9 – Preservation of Rights and Competent Jurisdiction

CAIRN.INFO SAS reserves the right to take legal action in the event of a violation of these terms of use to seek compensation for any potential damage.

Subject to the mandatory rules of public and private international law governing the user, French law governs the relationship between CAIRN.INFO SAS and the user. Any dispute relating to the use of this site will be exclusively governed by Belgian law. The courts and tribunals of Paris will have exclusive jurisdiction in case of litigation.

CAIRN.INFO SAS reserves the right to deny any internet user access to all or part of its site unilaterally and without prior notice, particularly in the event of a clear violation of these terms by a user.

10 – Miscellaneous

If any provision of these terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable under applicable law, such invalid or unenforceable provision will be deemed replaced by a valid, enforceable provision that most closely matches the intent of the original provision, and the remainder of the agreement will continue in effect.

This agreement represents the entire agreement between the user and CAIRN.INFO SAS regarding its site and supersedes all prior or contemporaneous communications and proposals, whether electronic, written, or oral, between the user and CAIRN.INFO SAS concerning its site.

A printed version of these terms and any notice given in electronic form will be admissible in judicial or administrative proceedings based on or relating to this agreement to the same extent and subject to the same conditions as other business documents and records originally generated and maintained in printed form.

In the case of temporary access mechanisms implemented under exceptional circumstances, Cairn.info SAS reserves the right to limit uses or interrupt access granted based on false declarations (for example, regarding affiliation with a subscribing institution).

CAIRN.INFO SAS reserves the right to modify the terms, conditions, and notices under which this site is offered.
