Interest in the role of cytokines in the onset and persistence of skin diseases has been growing over the years, particularly since the arrival of biologics. These are human-made proteins that are designed to target parts of the immune system that trigger inflammation. They come from a living source (a human or animal) or its products, or may be produced by cutting-edge biotechnology methods. They can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including severe psoriasis or urticaria, moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa or eczema.
Epidermal keratinocytes, which make up 90% of the epidermis and form a physical barrier, play a major role.
