The article elaborates on the highly polysemic concept of
“parenthood”. It sets out from a three-dimensional definition of
parenthood (exercise, practice and experience) put forward in 1998
by Didier Houzel, as this represented a key moment in French
society. Before that, during the years 1970-1980, this term’s
introduction by clinical psychology (with that of “dysparentalité”,
or dys-parenthood as formulated by René Clément) signalled a new
form of consideration that professionals, especially those involved
in child protection, were to give to the place occupied by parents.
Following this, as from the 1990s, the idea of “single parenthood”
triggered consideration for all possible later variations of
“multiple parenthood”, with a more sociological approach to
evolution of the family and distinctions between the biological,
domestic and social (Irène Théry). Since then, the relations
between parents, co-parenthood, the very identity of the parent and
the issues at stake with kinship have led on to multidisciplinary
developments that deserve greater clarification so as to limit
exaggerated use of the term.

task of soothing infants and easing children and adolescents
requires a construction of parenthood that is grounded in the

from trans-cultural clinical experience and research in this area,
this work shows the importance of intra-psychic, intra-subjective
and collective processes, and draws conclusions with respect to
prevention and care, both during pregnancy and in the course of the
establishment of the early parent-child interactions. Soothing and
easing children, and enabling them to grow up harmoniously are thus
two parental functions that are both singular and universal,

postpartum parental depression, this article highlights the issues
of the “baby effect” on the intrapsychicity of the mother and
father but also on active intersubjectivity within the couple. The
birth of the real child and the “rebirth” of the child in itself
for the father and the mother expose the couple to the emergence of
each other’s histories as infants and babies, with the risk of the
reactivation of traumatic or neurotic events. In the dynamics of
the couple, an intersubjectivity is then observed which is
organised on the basis of movements of entanglement or bringing
into conflict, or even of disentanglement, of the respective
subjectivities, rather like the rhythmicity of the primary
intersubjectivity, for the “better or worse” of their parenthood

marital bond involving an intrapsychic crisis in each of the
partners. The author studied the reorganisation of that bond at
work, as also the quality of parenting investment from the fourth
month of pregnancy to the first three months of the child’s life.
She emphasises the emergence of a perinatal marital anticipation
defined as the capacity of the spouses, during pregnancy, to
apprehend the process of intersubjective crisis inherent to the
transformations to come in their relationship. Perinatal conjugal
anticipation underlines the existence of a form of representation
of early triadification, which can be considered as an indicator of
the quality of parental investment and a favourable development of

Parenthood is a stage of life with significant psychological
issues, especially for a population presented as “at risk,” such as
adopted adults. This systematic literature review aims to summarize
results already published concerning parenthood among adopted
adults. Inclusion and exclusion criteria led to the collection of
ten publications on the subject, almost exclusively from
international databases. The results enabled the identification and
analysis of four themes : reactivation of adoption history
within the context of parenthood ; parenthood issues specific
to adoptees ; changes in relationships with adoptive and
biological parents triggered by access to parenthood ; and,
finally, parenthood as a source of resilience. The methodological
limitations of the existing works in this area encourage the
authors to emphasize the need for further empirical research into
this little-studied but at-risk population.

From Passivation to SubjectivationFrom their respective clinical
practices, the authors raise questions about the characteristics
and especially the deadlocks of motherhood among young single
mothers living in a Mother and Child Center. They base their
discussion on the now widely-held view that motherhood is a special
moment of psychic opening and, therefore, of re-activation of early
psychic trauma. They then attempt to show how the concept of
“passivation,” understood as a disorder in accessing passivity, can
prove to be helpful in this clinical context. The authors thus
demonstrate how maternity in these women reactivates the
psychological deadlocks of early childhood, which left them in
“passivation”, and also how this particular moment in their lives
can allow its development and re-start the process of
subjectivation. A clinical example is used to illustrate the
authors’ point of view.

or wanting to become one is a condition that favours the revival of
the imaginary child and imaginary parent, which a person has borne
since childhood. That being the case, the narcissistic challenges
related to parenthood consist in the fact that they have to undergo
enough successive transformations to cathect the required parental
attitudes as the child grows up. As shown in our clinical example,
unexpected events and, more generally, different tangible instances
can act as stumbling blocks in this process, starting with the
desire to reproduce. On the other hand, when parental
representations are appropriate enough, they help convey the
feeling of security needed for mutual detachment. We conclude with
a few elements, which may help with the latter, such as setting up
genuine personal spaces for the child, both metaphors and concrete
conditions in his psychological empowerment.

collectively talking about themselves in terms of parentality
specifically confront the complex issues of transgenerational
transmission. Becoming parent is the start, in its very process, of
a shift from a logic of legacy to a logic of transmission. The
author argues here on the basis of clinical material collected
within life-narrative groups discussing the subject of parentality.
Participating to life-narrative groups can help to represent one’s
own subjective position within generations. The specific theme of
parentality, as securing connections between participants,
accentuates the transgenerational dialectic as Freud (1914) had
already invited us to think about: being both an end in itself and

The study of psychic transmission processes must go along with a
study of transmission fantasies. The best way to psychic
transmission may be represented by projective identification, at
the heart of various modeling processes, such as the “imago
encroachment”. Parentality obviously mobilizes both transmission
and transmission processes. The infant inherits of narcissistic
needs; he has a mission of narcissistic continuity and reparation.
He also inherits of fantasies in which he might be obliged to fit
into. Parentality also mobilizes transmission fantasies that have a
function of confirming filiation and exculpating. These functions
are being reinforced in cases of traumatic filiation: the fantasy
must reconstruct filiation, stitch up the ruptures, exculpate the
subject, and make subjective the traumatic experience. Besides the
imago encroachment, repetition stands as one of the articulating
figures of both transmission and transmission fantasy. Finally,
transmission processes and transmission fantasies work together to
the development of internal parentality. The latter is described in
terms of psychic biparentality, based on psychic bisensuality in
its primary forms and articulated on child aspects of the Self to
create psychic bigenerationality.

types of filiation The study of
parentalization such as it manifests itself in Medically Assisted
Reproduction (amp) and in adoption is a fundamental excercise of
reflection which makes it possible not only to better grasp the
stakes involved in these filiation-procreations but more generally,
to better understand what happens in all the families with classic
filiation. Feelings of filiation and of parentality are established
not between procreators and those who are procreated but rather
between those who have lived a parentality together where the
oedipal conflict and the family history were able to be elaborated,
to be lived and conflictualized. In this study we attempt to
discover the factors which may be obstacles to the process of
parentalization and which are unique to each mode of
filiation : idealization of the child to be, idealization of
the adoptive situation or of the amp, the humanitarian motivation
to adopt, absence of both the integration and the establishment of
the filiation instituted field. We also study the consequences of
infertility on paternalization and maternalization and the
importance of the consecutive readjustment of the fantasized primal
scene, both as concerns the parents and the child. The adoptive
situation can cause specific problems when there has been a
situation of earlier deprivation. We attempt to discover those
factors which might provoke a level of insecurity of the parental
field sufficient to destabilize the child in the construction of
his identity and his filiation.

cadre.
