to discover the pregnancy’s secret. Before the treatment of
pregnancy as a medical matter, a pregnant body was considered as
permeable to the outside world. It’s only through the new
techniques of medical imagery that one got the chance to unveil the
secret of pregnancy. This article will uncover the road between
divinatory and scientific practices revealing parts of the
mysteries behind pregnancy. Scans and medical imagery did reveal
the body of the fetus while psychoanalysis did give a frame of
reference in order to think about the psychic revising occurring
during the pregnancy. From body to psyche, the aim remains the
immutable wish to produce transparency about pregnancy.

feminity ? If we consider that child desire is a substitute
for phallus desire (« penisneid »), and that the desire
to be a mother tries to answer to what occurred in the woman’s
(ravaging) relationship with her own mother, thus it definitely
seems difficult to consider feminity without maternity. But we also
take for granted that the arrival of a child in reality doesn’t
necessarily correspond to the response these desires called for and
that the pathological situations – displaying the very ambivalence
of the mothers towards their chidren – are far from being rare
(some can even prove to be extreme) and thus, it will be admitted
that the link between feminity and maternity is sometimes
articulated as a radical opposition. That was already the underlying
meaning of Medee’s myth, « the real woman » according to
Lacan. By killing her own children she was also killing the mother
within herself, not to give room anymore to the woman only.

history. But sometimes the actualization of violent and infantile
material doesn’t allow for the transformation and repossession of
the psychic heritage. The collusion and the confusion with the
previous generations bring forth buried infantile traumas and
terrors that will haunt the imaginary world of pregnancy, under the
shape of anxious and frightening images seemingly strange to
oneself but nevertheless quite familiar. The future parent
organizes his defenses expelling and projecting this material onto
the baby in gestation. The baby is thus attributed feelings,
emotions, affects and helplessness that the parent denies to
himself or doesn’t recognize as part of his own family story. The
imaginary baby, a captive of ancestral characters from previous
generations, can be fantasized as un-aesthetic, persecutor,
monstrous, even a lost soul or ghost figure. Medical progress in
antenatal diagnosis and in medical radiology can also favor
anxieties and perinatal fantasies The psychoanalytical family
therapy in perinatality represents an important prevention against
confusion states during this time of family crisis sensitive to
remodeling. It accompanies regression and allows transformation of
the material and the archaic fears in generations differentiation.

Version courte : La transmission maternelle
