Vincent van Gogh was born exactly one year after the birth of a
stillborn brother who was also named Vincent. Many of his
biographers (Nagera, Lubin, Michel) consider that this fact was at
the origin of the severe problems that marked his life :
Vincent was a “replacement child.”Van Gogh’s most recent
biographers, Naifeh and Smith, do not find any evidence that this
circumstance had such importance. Their study of Vincent’s early
years rather describes a profound incompatibility between a
stubborn, undisciplined, and strange child and a mother obsessed by
her desires for the conformity in which she herself was raised,
thus leading to an early rejection of the child. This paper, in
relating the main steps of Vincent’s life, describes the varied
manifestations of a disturbed attachment and suggests, in the light
of Bowlby’s attachment theory, that Vincent might have suffered
from a severe attachment disorder.

pratique psychanalytique ?
Or le

Attachment theory offers a rich conceptual framework from which to
understand the dynamic of adolescence and its pitfalls. Furthermore
it provides guidelines to design therapeutic interventions. What is
most critical during this period is the successful balancing
between attachment and exploration. Although earlier experiences
and internal working models build on it are deterministic the
« fit » between the adolescent and his parents must also
be emphasized. Insecure attachment is not a disorder but it appears
to be a major risk factor for the development of psychopathology at
this age. « Dismissive » adolescents are more at risk for
externalising disorders, whereas internalizing disorders are more
frequent in « preoccupied » subjects. From an attachment
perspective the central task of the therapeutic setting is to
provide a secure base for the adolescent but also for his parents,
in order to restore exploration of the self and relationships

enables him to close up with his attachment figure when

a purpose. The hospital institution relieves the suffering of
patients. Nevertheless, caregivers become vulnerable to psychic
suffering both because of prolonged exposure to the suffering of
the patient and also to work-related stress. They can be in need of
support and comfort. In the light of attachment theory and based on
a clinical situation, the hospital institution is considered here
as an attachment figure for caregivers. Within this perspective,
institutional failures could be apprehended as a lack of
satisfaction of a fundamental need for protection of caregivers. It
would seem there is an ethic of taking care of caregivers, bringing
together the values of the consideration for and the commitment to
the human person. The common attention directed towards the patient
would find itself henceforth reinforced.
