Direct Link ? Listening is a notion we often take for granted.
Not only do we grant it a common meaning but also assume that it is
a generally acquired faculty. This article deals with listening
within the framework of clinical analytical practice, the space
created in which analytical knowledge is present and circulates. A
number of questions must be addressed here – what is being listened
to – the analysand’s narrative, the subject’s childhood, the
inherent context of the session ? How does listening function
in clinical practice ? In the light of the theoretical
knowledge the last century has given us, can we consider that an
ear free of knowledge and devoid of desire is still possible ?
Does having been listened to mean that one can then become a
listener in turn ? Is the transmission of an ear for
analytical listening an elaborative ability ? Does it form
part of the line of psychoanalysts from past, through present and
to the future ? Does our ear differ according to the framework
it is exercised in ? These questions will be addressed without
overlooking the necessity for the analyst, like any other person
involved in the act of creation, of letting go to primary and
secondary processes without regard for self-control or restraint.

What happens to an analysis when bodies lose sight of each other
and only the hallucinatory virtue of representation ensures their
existence? This question brings us back to a central issue in
settings that essentially involve speech, when we are interested in
the action and effects of its incarnation in the dialectic of
presence and absence. This shows the importance of the flesh and
therefore of the analyst’s body, upon which violent demands are
sometimes made when identity seesaws, when words fail, crushed by
the force of madness: such phenomena are familiar, of course, in
the analysis of psychotic moments or patients, but are intensely
activated whenever the subject’s self-intimacy is eclipsed or
threatened with disappearance. The incarnation in the transference
– and not the embodiment of the transference – performs a decisive
function, because it can prove to be dangerous, whenever the
boundaries are porous, or whenever the mixture haunts the analysis.

This article describes the complementarity of the setting and the
psychoanalytic process from the angle of organizational principles
common to life systems as a whole. Drawing on the theory of
autopoietic systems, situated at the junction of biology, the
cognitive sciences, sociology and the philosophy of mind, we show
how the specificity of the psychoanalytic setting allows for the
emergence of an operational closure that gives the psychoanalytic
process its identity and autonomy. The latter may thus be said to
be organized in a similar manner to the psychical apparatus and its
functioning. The article concludes by exploring the impact of the
autopoietic perspective on the ethics and the method of the
clinician in his practice.
