these women have faced following their decision. In particular,
their need to invent elaborate strategies of defense to protect

recourse for outside help, reveals that the issue of abortion is

qualitative and quantitative research on women facing unplanned
pregnancy, whether or not they choose to voluntarily interrupt it,
this paper examines the reproductive norm – that is to say, the
socially defined “right conditions” to have a child (right age,
relationship type, professional situation) prevailing in French
society today. The lesser role played, in women’s discourses, by
professional issues in the decision to have an abortion, when women
reach the socially endorsed age of motherhood shows that
representations of the sexual division of labour – reproductive
labour for women, productive labour for men – still apply. The
valorisation of motherhood, a factor which is today again, as it
used to be in the 70’s, strongly emphasized within the reproductive
norm, can thus be viewed as one of the ways to undermine the
tensions between a feminine model which advocates the conciliation
between family and professional life, and a social reality still
very far from this model.

semble presque tabou.

Women who resort to induced abortion : different profiles
and treatment protocols This paper is based on the results of a
DREES survey on women who aborted in 2007. Its aim is to determine
whether women who had an induced abortion show specific
socio-demographic characteristics. The interviewed women present
different socio-demographic profiles. The abortion method they
choose is linked to their gestational age and to the time required
to access the operation. Four type-clusters of induced abortions
are defined and associated with four clusters of women, according
to their age, matrimonial status, previous terminated pregnancies,
and contraception method. Surgical and late abortions are mostly
requested by young and student women, but also by working women
with many children, as well as foreign and low-income women.
Medical abortions are mainly practised on women with a partner and
children and no previous abortion history, but also on young and
graduate women.

Voluntary Pregnancy TerminationBased on the clinical account of a
late voluntary pregnancy termination by a young woman, the author
considers the sentence “I killed my child”, heard repeatedly in
such cases, as a conscious expression of the unconscious fantasy of
infanticide. The voluntary termination of a pregnancy can thus be
considered as acting out this fantasy, which allows us also to
understand the enormous guilt that usually comes after an
intervention. The author then suggests that this acting out is an
attempt, channelled through the body, to replace an incomplete
symbolic castration, i.e., an incomplete separation from the
primary Other. This active substitution will eventually fail unless
its meaning is not expressed verbally.

Perception and feelings in Togolese women after induced abortionThe
objective was to describe the motives, feelings and representations
related to induced abortion in Togolese women. It was a
cross-sectional study from March to April 2006. Data collected were
age, marital status, education, occupation, social and
psychological parameters associated to the pregnancy. The sample
was composed of women aged from 14 to 34 year-old, including 25%
adolescents. Reasons for induced abortion were economic
difficulties (64%), desire to continue professional activities
(32%) and conflicts with partner or family (24%). A mixed picture
of feeling of relief and fear was reported after abortion in the
majority of women. Induced abortion was perceived as a crime and a
damnation in the majority of them. For women aged less than 26
years, it was an act of liberation, versu emancipation for the
elders. Fear and regret were expressed respectively by 72.73% and
63.64% of uninstructed, versus 46.80% and 26.67% for secondary
level instructed women. Feeling and representation of the induced
abortion are linked to social factors, similar to those reported in
other African and Eastern studies. It is recommended to integrate
complete sexual and reproduction health education in youth programs
at all levels.
