haine.

Céline, writer and anti-Semite, has been the subject of numerous
and repeated controversies. I will argue that he offers a case of
self claimed fanatic and that he raises doubts about the
possibility of educating or re-educating him. Reading the three
“pamphlets”, the letters published in the press under the
Occupation and the interviews given in the post-war period allows
us to reconstruct his fanatic doctrine. It consists of a murderous
conception animated by the “mongoose spirit”. It implies an
understanding of history as a “race war” and a theorization of
style as a “little music” expressing the biological root of being.
Thus his fanaticism turns out to be not “insanity”, but a strictly
rational elaboration, which is based on one and single principle
that is itself exempt from all critical reflection, and therefore
escapes the power of education. Céline, in this part of his work
and in his last three novels, has thus produced a literary system
of education for fanaticism where he, himself, is the paradigm.

20, 1951), a result of judicial trickery, Céline worked overtime to
construct his legend of victimhood, before discovering, in Autumn
1950, a passionate interest for Holocaust denial in its early
phases. Three major elements of his legend- the persecuted
innocent, the pacifistic patriot, and the cursed writerwould play a
major role in the rehabilitation of the writer-pamphleteer, who
engaged in anti-Jewish propaganda from late 1937 through the
Collaboration. These elements have oriented even recent
journalistic and academic writing on Céline, shaping public opinion
on his “literary genius.” He was the first recognized writer to
cast doubt upon the Nazi extermination of European Jews. This
“powerful anti-Jewish visionary,” to use the expression of Jean
Drault, quickly perceived in Holocaust denial a symbolic weapon,
capable of reigniting the hatred of Jews for new reasons.

Céline under the occupationFollowing the publication of his first
two pamphlets, Louis-Ferdinand Céline became active both
ideologically and politically under the Nazi occupation as never
before. He was busy with preparing the new edition of School for
Corpses to which he added an introduction and propaganda
photographs, and he also published A Nice Mess in February 1941. In
addition, he sent out approximately thirty letters to the most
extreme militant, anti-Semitic and ultra national-socialist
collaborationist newspapers. In November 1941 he openly supported
Jacques Doriot and in March 1942 he signed the French
Intellectuals’ Manifesto against British Crimes. He also
participated in major anti-Semitic propaganda demonstrations in
Paris, and in December 1941 he organized a meeting of the leading
collaborationists which resulted in a creation of a mutual platform
together with Deloncle. In addition to the above activities, we know
of other denunciations Céline made which are acknowledged today as
actual although his biographers prefer to ignore them. Among them
is an oral denunciation made before a crowd of Doriot supporters,
and written denunciations published in the press or included in
letters sent to political or administrative authorities. In the
final analysis, after examining the testimonies given by Ernst
Jünger (on December 7th, 1941) and Gerhard Heller, and a letter
addressed to Marie Canavaggia (dated October 1937), one comes to
the conclusion that the usual invalidations of Céline’s
denunciations cannot be accepted and establishes with near
certainty the validity of Jünger’s powerful testimony.

complotModern political myths that claim the highest and longest
lasting popularity are those which originate from different
symbolic sources and various ideological frameworks of which they
retain traces, thus fulfilling multiple social demands and
requirements. As such they prove themselves “useful” towards
several social classes and political streams. They can “last” on
the sole condition that they are regularly “modified”. This was the
case with the myth of the “Judeo-Freemasonry Complot” which called
for the creation of a historical figure, the “Judeo-Freemasonry”,
to whom myth believers attributed a secret power and an incredible
capacity to activate historical events which was interpreted as
directing the course of history. The idea of a “Judeo-Freemasonry
Complot” had its origins in the “Century of Progress on the basis
of a false anti-Jewish prototype, the “Letter of Simonini” that
Abbot Barruel claimed to have received in August 1806.This letter
is at the center of a counter-story of liberation which was
invented by Catholic polemicists. A huge tale of manipulation,
alienation and subjugation, similar to the discourse on the origins
of Evil in History, was created around the “Judeo-Freemasonry
Complot”.The article analyzes the main stages of the creation,
adaptation and metamorphosis of this anti-Jewish myth that while
presenting its double face – theological-religious and political –
also brings back the belief in the power of the devil throughout
history. This can be found thriving in the 20th century in the
midst of anti-Jewish propaganda having as its vector The Protocols
of the Elders of Zion. The article also shows that in later periods
of history, this modern demonologist myth fed the imagination
required to create both the anti-globalization and Islamist vision
of the world.

characterized by political struggles and a clear resurgence of
anti-Semitism, the militant members of the first French anti-racist
organization – Ligue internationale contre l’antisémistisme (LICA)
– wanted to believe that France, which had entered the war in
September 1939, would revive the “sacred union” which prevailed
during World War I. The drastic circumstances of the time were not
sufficient to change the position of those groups who openly
expressed their hatred of Jews in the 1930s. This article deals
with the anti-Jewish phenomena that existed from 1939 to 1940 when
the French were defeated. It raises questions about the nature and
range of these phenomena as well as about the attitude adopted by
the authorities towards them at a time when one was conscious of
the imperative of “national unity”. An anti-racial defamation
decree was enacted for the first time in the history of France on
the eve of the war. It offered French society, among other things,
a tool with which to fight racism; however, its application has to
be questioned in the context of this troubled historical period.
