International Labour OrganizationThe negotiation of the convention
“Decent work for domestic workers” at the International Labour
Organization (ILO) in 2010/2011 counters domestic workers’
invisibility. The paper engages with the question of how domestic
workers mobilize towards a convention and how they cope with
international negotiations given challenges such as the peculiar
terrain of ILO’s tripartism. Through an analysis of the content of
the convention, the paper argues that the framing of domestic work
as a labour issue makes the so far invisible labour relation
between domestic workers and their employers visible and promotes a
rights-based approach, at the cost, however, of obscuring other
dimensions such as the gendered and international division of
labour.

almost ten years, the author shows that it is mainly married women,
between 30 and 59 years of age and of the least privileged social
layers, who take on the heaviest burdens. Using demographic
projections based on the aging of the population and the increase
in women’s waged work, she presents a model — the Madrid scale —

domestic workers in GuianaThis article proposes to analyse
situations experienced by Haitian female domestic workers based on
research conducted in Haiti and Guiana. Comparing how these women
represent themselves on the basis of the work they do underlines
the relation between their social condition and the “identity work”
it entails in contexts where hierarchical relationships reflect
different modes of authority and different conceptions of unequal
relationships. The first part of the article presents the working
conditions of “maids” in Haiti and of migrant female “housekeepers”
in French Guiana. The article then examines identity construction
in relation to the hierarchical relationships embodied in contexts
that shape social and cultural differentiation and categorisation.
The last part analyses how these relationships develop meaning and
take part in setting up a set of values that women use to redefine
and reformulate the lack of consideration they face because of the
stigmatisation attached to their employment. In both contexts, the
article will stress the tension stemming from the reference to a
common humanity and the lack of a system of questioning
hierarchical relations based on the dissimilarity between
individuals and groups.

is to analyze the domestic environment from a sociology of time

text proposes to conceptualize the time used in domestic labor and
care as donated time : time that is neither given nor offered
as a present and that operates in a different (not opposed) manner

as its basis a reasoning that establishes guidelines that remain
tacit and entail a relationship of reciprocity ; the
obligation to give, receive and give back. An approach of
domesticity from the time donated perspective allows to spread the
analysis further than the material aspects, in order to deepen the
study into the moral and the relational dimensions (moralization of

This article studies the way in which men and women from the
working class perceive the unequal division of domestic work and
react to it. Based both on statistical data and on
17 monographies of heterosexual couples with children, it
argues that the historical period between the 1980s and today is
less characterized by a permanent and positive attachment of the
working class to a strict division of gendered roles than by a slow
differentiation of conceptions in the field of domestic work within
those classes. Attachment to a strict gendered division of labor is
mostly found among the most destitute layers. Stabilized households
of the working class tend to forsake this division through a
modest, but accrued participation of male workers and employees.

Using an approach combining quantitative and qualitative data, this
article examines the reconfigurations of male roles induced by
women's increased participation in the labour market and in
household spending in Dakar and Lomé. These changes marginally
affect men's involvement in domestic work and their contribution
remains limited, occasional and focused on certain very specific
tasks, and even more so in Dakar than in Lomé. Alongside a dominant
masculinity based on the idealized male breadwinner model, other
practices seem to emerge, taking place in the private sphere of the
home, and mainly with regard to the education of children. But
these are a further extension of the role of household head and
represent forced reconfigurations of male practices that have lost
their usual field of expression and structure (providing materially
for the family).

The article traces the key aspects of feminist-Marxist thought,
starting from its early days in the 1920s to its recent
developments around the theory of social reproduction. Defined as
the set of daily tasks and activities necessary for life and work
capacity, reproductive work is at the heart of these theoretical
developments. After having examined the first feminist critiques of
Marx’s work, the article explores the debate on domestic work that
took place in the 1970s. It then sets out to show how
feminist-Marxist thought has evolved since then towards a broader
analytical framework that allows understanding reproductive work
inside and outside the domestic sphere: paid and uncompensated,
recognized and unrecognized. Lastly, the article reviews recent
developments in feminist-Marxist thought, bringing to light an
unitary approach to oppression through the development of a theory
of social reproduction.
