not easily lend itself to a Marxist account : it is too short,
it is written in free direct speech and ignores the social and

text is attempted, with the help of Voloshinov’s philosophy of

concepts of the pluriaccented word, dialogism and refraction. The

Marxism and the philosophy of language (1929), wrongly attributed
to M. Bakhtin, gave rise to contradictory reactions. One of the
many paradoxes that surounded the book is that it is in the West
that it has been the most successful, twenty-five years before its
new publication in Russia, where it had been totally forgotten
since the beginning of the 1930s. What is at stake is the
understanding of the word “Marxist”: generally read as a “Marxist”
book by Western intellectuals, it is on the contrary considered as
an “anti-marxist book” in post-Soviet Russia. This paper tries to
cast a new light on the relationship between language, ideology and
social groups, by examining the methods of translation of the
reflexions on language in Eastern Europe.

Marcel Cohen, the survey and the linguistic facts, from 1908 to
1928 In the world history of Sociolinguistics, Marcel Cohen is
often quoted because of his book, Pour une sociologie du langage
(1956). We show that his sociological approach to language and
languages was elaborated far before that date, at the very start of
the XXth century. Very early on he became passionately interested
in multi-language situations, and in the complexity of language
practice, developing a method based on fieldwork and observation.
Three of his earliest texts are analyzed here: his first article
(1908) on the jargon of engineers (polytechniciens), in which the
influence of his teacher Antoine Meillet, in "Comment les mots
changent de sens"(1904), is clearly discernable; then his first
book (1912), dedicated to the Arabic spoken by Jews in Algiers,
having carried out a survey in that large, multilingual city.
Finally, his Instructions pour les voyageurs (1928), a short
methodological treatise on linguistic surveys is presented. In all
of these, we witness Cohen's curiosity for the urban practices of
languages, for the variety and diversity of linguistic situations;
and his loyalty to empirical linguistic material as it crops up in
the field, collected by reliable methods. Rereading these three
texts allows us to follow M. Cohen's sociological view of languages
as it emerged, announcing the sociolinguistic project which was to
become his 1956 opus.

After a presentation of the book and the context in which it
appeared in 1956, Marcel Cohen's approach, and the methodological
and theoretical guidelines he used, are analyzed. Cohen
distinguishes between linguistic phenomena (language in use, as
well as individual language systems), social phenomena (a social
structure, social situations), and historical phenomena. These
distinctions throw up still-relevant questions about the recurrent
difficulties which have led to the recognition of the importance of
taking contrasting viewpoints, of never considering phenomena in
isolation, of using varied approaches, and of taking account of
history. Factors, and particularly social factors, which determine
linguistic change are a central area of inquiry, since language
systems and language use evolve independently of each other. At
this point, a reference to Stalin is made, with the notions of
`base' and`superstructure'. Though Cohen does not play down their
interest, he follows Meillet in preferring the term `institution'.
However, he above all asserts the need to leave such questions
open, while further data are collected, and the potential
contribution of other human sciences explored.
