The present study adopts a pragmatic
approach with the objective of elucidating the essential components
of Swanson’s theory of caring through reflective practice in a
clinical context of heart failure. As per Swanson’s five caring
processes, the nurse’s actions will be guided by the following
principles: understanding the patient’s needs and fears
(“knowing”), offering an emotional presence (“being with”),
coordinating the patient’s return home (“doing for”), and
supporting her autonomy while mobilizing her family’s resources
(“enabling”). These interventions are rooted in trust in Mrs B’s
ability to overcome these challenges (“maintaining belief”).
Initially applied in perinatal services, this humanistic and
relational approach to care is now practiced by nurses in various
clinical departments.

The Humanistic Model of Nursing Care - UdeM : an innovative
and pragmatic perspectiveAs in many other countries, Québec is not
immune to healthcare reforms, which can unfortunately hinder
quality of care as well as induce some dehumanization, both for the
patients and the healthcare professionals. Thus, the
« Humanistic Model of Nursing Care - UdeM » (HMNC-UdeM)
aspires to offer an innovative perspective that aims at improving
the quality and the safety of care, in addition to satisfaction and
well-being for both patients and nurses. While respecting their
theoretical influences, the authors present their vision of the
central concepts of the discipline and the Model’s key concepts,
seeking to make them more understandable, accessible, and
applicable in nurses’ daily practice. Therefore, the aim of this
article is to raise awareness of the Model into the nursing
community, to promote its implantation in nursing’s spheres of
activities, in addition to demonstrate its applicability and impact
in nursing research. It appears that this model is promising for
the renewal and the development of humanistic interventions for
patients’ care.

The nurse’s thought for a significant social contribution by the
production and use of scientific knowledgeThe social contribution
of nurses to the health of the population is mainly defined by the
knowledge supporting their actions. Conceptualization in nursing
guides the production and utilisation of scientific knowledge
within the discipline. The purpose of this paper is to present the
recent thoughts on nursing theory and to provide some strategies to
integrate them within the activities of knowledge mobilization, in
practice, research, and education. When nurses are engaged in
mobilizing theoretical and empirical knowledge in answering nursing
practice questions and in discussing social health issues, they
participate in persons, families, and communities health
improvement, while affirming their disciplinary and social
identity. Called to be change agents in health care systems, with
other professional team members, it is important that nurses be
prepared to mobilize knowledge and to engage in critical reasoning,
and ethical conduct. Their social contribution will be as strong as
the value they assign to nursing knowledge and their participation
in producing it.

The year 2019 saw nursing science become an official discipline in
France, following the academization process initiated in 2009.
Although nurses did not wait for this breakthrough to embark on
doctoral-level courses, the absence of a dedicated academic nursing
pathway has meant that it has not been possible to gain an overall
picture of the theses written by nurses in French universities. The
aim of this contribution is to compile an inventory of these theses
by identifying the disciplinary fields in which the nurses defended
them, as well as the preferred methodological approaches adopted.
Following a computerized search using various databases, 132 theses
were identified spanning a forty-year period, with a significant
increase over the last ten years. Eighty-four percent of these
doctoral theses were defended in the disciplines of humanities and
social sciences, with a very large proportion in education
sciences. Qualitative methods were preferred, with investigations
that used interviews. The number of theses in the biological and
health sciences has seen a recent increase. This inventory provides
a benchmark for the doctoral output of nurses at a pivotal point in
their professional history.
