Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease clinically characterized by erythematous scaly plaques. It affects 1-3% of the world’s population [1], with an annual prevalence of 453 per 100,000 in Korea [2]. Patients with psoriasis often have high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity compared with the general population, and these comorbidities occur more frequently as the severity of psoriasis increases [3, 4]. Psoriasis and its comorbidities can negatively affect a patient’s life physically and mentally [5].
There are various treatment modalities for psoriasis, including topical therapy, phototherapy, systemic non- biological therapies, and biological agents. Depending on the disease severity, response to previous treatments, quality of life issues, and comorbidities, different treatment modalities may be administered [6]. Approximately 20% of patients with psoriasis have moderate-to-severe psoriasis [7], wherein a biological agent can be used as monotherapy or combined therapy [8].
Several clinical trials involving different biological agents have shown remarkable safety and efficacy [9–12] and have ushered physicians into a new era in treating psoriasis. Achieving a Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) 100 response is important for improving the patient’s quality of life and the therapeutic perspective [13]. Reportedly, 46–58% of patients achieve PASI 100 at 48–52 weeks [9–12], and Asians show a relatively low PASI 100 response compared with non-Asians [14]…
