This issue is a relatively new one. The first publications on this subject by French clinicians appeared in the 1980s whereas the developmental psychologists began addressing it in the 1990s. The issue is also a difficult one. It is very relevant today in the context of the controversy regarding the early role of the father in infancy. This paper attempts to shed light on this issue. It begins by examining the infant’s attachment to the father. Then, it examines, from a more critical perspective, the bond between father and infant and its role and modalities. Lastly, it discusses how the position of the developmental psychologist may overlap with that of today’s psychoanalysts.
