The authors present new knowledge about biological processes underlying parenting which can explain some reactions of parents with a premature baby when hospitalized in neonatal units. Fear and danger are the core issues. The authors summarize the notions of motivational system (attachment and caregiving) as described in Attachment theory, the biological regulation of fear in human beings, the role of Oxytocin and the notion of evolutionary psychology. These notions highlight the impact of hospitalisation, prematurity for parents independently of their personal story.
