Geographer, former director of the French Research Institute in Iran (1978–1993) and of the “Monde Iranien” research team (CNRS). His work, often conducted in collaboration with Iranian colleagues, focuses on the social and political geography and geopolitics of Iran: the emergence of a new urban society and a nation.
