Léon Poliakov (1910-1997) was 14 when his family, from the Russian Jewish bourgeoisie, moved to Paris, where his publisher father founded the Pariser Tageblatt, a newspaper for German Jews. In 1939, Poliakov joined the French army as a foreign volunteer.
